A group of strippers in East London are selling merchandise to avoid financial destitution as a result of the pandemic. East London Strippers Collective ELSCwhich began as an informal networking group for strippers and sex workers inhave taken formal steps to become an official business so they can support members of their community during Covid The group, which has 19 members, have set up their shopselling bags, mugs, t-shirts and face masks featuring illustrations of the dancers, in collaboration with a of life model illustrators as well as ethical clothing company No Sweat UK.
Stripper, writer, activist and ELSC co-founder Stacey Clare, who is in her 30s, said starting the grassroots enterprise was driven by an urgent need to support vulnerable members of their community, who are facing serious Strip clubs in east london hardship as a result of the pandemic. She said a lot of dancers have suffered both "financially and psycho logically" as a result of Covid Like other entertainment businesses, SEVs Sexual Entertainment Venues were forced to shut down by the introduction of government lockdown restrictions in March - but unlike other businesses, most SEVs are still closed.
All the strip clubs shut down overnight, and the majority of the strip clubs in the UK have been shut since March last year. While most venues were allowed to reopen as restrictions eased last summer, SEVs were the exception - despite restrictions in place since which meant dancers had to perform one metre away from customers. Shockingly, unlike the - mostly male - managers, bar staff, door staff, DJs, and anyone else with a paid role in SEVs, the dancers weren't offered furlough. Stacey described the disparity as just " one of the sickening facts" of the pandemic. Stacey said "one of the big knock-on effects" of the closures was that a lot of dancers were forced to start working online.
Stacey said sex workers starting out on a platform like Only Fans can be vulnerable to exploitation by online predators. She described "a real blind spot in people's thinking" when it comes to vulnerable people in the her industry being exploited, both online and offline. Stacey said this discomfort le to 'abolitionist' attitudes of " shut it down, make it stop" which drive sex work underground and lead to the increasing Strip clubs in east london of sex work. Stacey described how strip clubs can be " bizarrely one of the safest places to operate as a sex worker in the UK. Stacey said these factors are "just some of the things that keep us relatively safe," compared to more clandestine forms of sex work which happen behind closed doors, with no ability and therefore no access to justice under the legal system.
They may want to stay in it. Stacey said all of these things feed into the thinking and decision-making behind setting up the shop. Get the latest London news straight on your phone without having to open your browser - and get all the latest breaking news as notifications on your screen.
